The Hole Story
Hole 3: This straightaway hole presents a potential scoring opportunity for those who manage both distance and precision. The green can be reachable in two, but ponds guarding the right side near the approach demand careful shot placement.
The green slopes noticeably from back to front, rewarding approaches that finish below the hole. Even so, a two-putt is never assured, as subtle breaks and quick surfaces challenge every stroke. Smart positioning and disciplined play are key to walking away with a good score here.
Naming the Hole

Named for the Dark Purple Magnolia (Magnolia ‘Vulcan’ × ‘Iolanthe’), also known as the Black Magnolia, this hole is graced by trees that combine strength and elegance. In early spring, they burst into deep burgundy-purple, tulip-shaped blooms—some reaching nearly six inches across—before giving way to lush green foliage. With the Oregon Coast’s cool temperatures and steady moisture, a second, lighter bloom may appear in mid-summer, adding another touch of color to the landscape.
This vigorous, open-branched deciduous magnolia, first cultivated by Mark Jury in New Zealand and released in 1998, thrives in full sun to partial shade and favors moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Its graceful form and dramatic blossoms make it an exceptional specimen tree, perfectly suited to the coastal setting.
You’ll find these striking Black Tulip Magnolias lining the back side of the lake on the right of the green, their rich color reflecting in the water—a stunning contrast to the greens and blues that define this memorable hole.
