The Hole Story
Hole 1: A subtle dogleg right invites a precise drive to the center of the fairway—too far left or right, and the trees will punish an errant shot. From there, an accurate approach is essential to reach the elevated green, where only a well-executed second shot will set up a good scoring opportunity.
Naming the Hole

The Gardens at Alderbrook Golf Course
Named for the majestic Port Orford Cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana), this hole honors one of Oregon’s most remarkable native trees. Also known as Lawson cypress, the species thrives along the coastal ranges of southern Oregon and northwestern California, from sea level to elevations of nearly 5,000 feet. Prized for its fine-grained, aromatic, and durable wood, Port Orford Cedar is among the most valuable timber species in western North America.
In its natural habitat, this conifer is often found along streamsides, bogs, and other moist lowlands, where its enduring wood provides essential structure for aquatic ecosystems—offering shelter and stability for fish, amphibians, and other wildlife. Higher up, it can also be found gracing slopes and ridgelines with its elegant, silvery-green foliage.
On our opening hole, a historic row of Port Orford Cedars lines the left side of the fairway and green, framing the landscape with timeless beauty. These trees stand as living witnesses to the region’s natural heritage and serve as one of the most distinctive highlights of our course.
