The Mook at Alderbrook design contest details

Objectives:

  1.  Add intrigue & character to the back nine, more specifically holes 11/12/13.
  2. Remove safety concern and routing problem with 12/13.
  3. Add length to the course (not just limited to 11/12/13, or even the back 9).

The Mook at Alderbrook Golf Course, Tillamook, Oregon.

Parameters:

  1. Limited budget. We need to keep this course operating.  As much work we can do while the back 9 fairways are being established the better.  This also means this is the time we have the least resources available to come out of our pockets.
  2.  Ideally, we’re only adding 1 green, that can be constructed while golf is still being played around it.  We look at this as a 1-3 year project.  We need to be able to do this work ourselves over time (i.e. our best resources are ingenuity and ability to get things done by ourselves).
  3. Tees can be added as golf is being played elsewhere.
  4. Large empty space between current 13 green and 11 tee is a hazard, either partially/all a lake or wetlands hazard.  May take some wetlands mitigation to do what we want to do with this space, but it’s safest to view this as a hazard.
  5. Minimal impact into potential area north/west/east of 13 green and respective cart path.

Other Thoughts for feedback:

  1.  #15 green is staying.  How can we improve it?  Ideas:  raise tee box up.  Lower green down.
  2. USGA says our course has character.  In order to support future golf tournaments:
  3. Need to lengthen course a bit
  4. Need to smooth out fairways
  5. Need to do something about 15 hole, need to be able to see top of flag without extension.
  6. NW corner of course by tee box 12 & 13 is very difficult to maintain and have look nice. What do you think of hazard (e.g. field of calla lilies or other ornamental hazard).  Currently it only looks well kept 2-3 months a year, take away the liability and accentuate the environment.  Potential Labyrinth with wetlands/ornamental plants.
  7. The flower hole – see photos — #8 add 1-2 flower holes.  Need suggestions how to draw out.  Take a basic par 3 and make it memorable, this also can go for #17, though, #8 is along the road.
  8. Areas of the course we’re reclaiming are the areas that I feel are free game to add flowers/trees.
  9. Doughty road/Kilchis River Rd. line of hydrangeas.  People will drive from hours away just to see Doughty Rd. People will drive from hours away to play golf here.
  10. Good enough is not good enough.
  11. What are some other serious problems with our course or areas that need the most improvement?

Golf Course Design Contest Awards:

  1.  We’re prepared to give one annual membership away to the person with the design closest to what we go with.  If multiple people have similar ideas, we will go with the plan that closest matches what we go with.  If multiple people have the exact same idea we will go with the plan that is described the best and gives us the most help.  In other words we’re only giving away one membership.
  2. Teams accomplish more than individuals.  It may be possible that you work together as a team to accomplish a design, then we can compensate the team with the value of a membership with one barter or another.
  3. Contest Design due Nov. 1st by 9 PM.  We want to get started ASAP.  If you can justify a reason for an extension, it may be granted up to one week.
  4. Email submissions to patrick@themook.com.  Please contact him at 503.812.9190 with questions or e-mail at patrick@themook.com.
  5. Questions/Comments.  This presentation and respective details will be posted on video at www.themook.com.
